The ancient Bulgarians were an Indo-European people who started a
state-forming tradition in their land of origin. In the 1st-2nd centuries AD,
Bulgaria which enjoyed its zenith under Kan Kubrat in the 7th century
AD. Following the Khazar aggression, a part of the Bulgarians led by
Kan Asparuh headed to the Danube, scored a victory over Byzantium
and set by the Danube the foundations of the oldest of present-day
European states. Another part of the Bulgarians established Volga
Bulgaria (in Russia today). In the Balkans, the Bulgarians accessed Slavs
and Thracians thus forming the modern Bulgarian nation.
