The Thracian Spartacus remained the most outstanding
tombs, temples are all evidence to the Thracian culture.
In the 1st century BC the Thracians fell under the rule of
Rome, and of its successor Byzantium. Christianity was
introduced in the Bulgarian lands as early as the 1st
century AD, and the Council of Serdica (present-day
Sofia) in 343 AD played an important role in the history
of the church.
